The ICC will trial pink balls in Test cricket to reduce play lost to bad light, following approval from its executive board.
The move, which requires agreement from both teams, aims to improve visibility when fading light makes traditional red balls difficult to see. Pink balls are already used in day-night Tests.
The ICC also announced research into new lighting technology to help officials and venues minimise weather-related interruptions.
In another rule change, head coaches or designated staff will now be allowed onto the field during drink breaks in ODIs.
The governing body also reduced the innings break in T20 internationals from 20 to 15 minutes and granted umpires access to Hawk-Eye data to help identify illegal bowling actions.
