The announcement came during a visit to Ottawa by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, the first such visit by a Chinese foreign minister in a decade. According to China’s foreign ministry, Wang held talks with his Canadian counterpart Anita Anand and discussed ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation.

Wang said relations between the two countries had entered a new phase, with exchanges and cooperation across various sectors fully restored and major trade concerns addressed. He acknowledged that China-Canada ties had experienced “twists and turns” in recent years but emphasized the importance of moving forward.

The two sides agreed to resume consultations on political and security issues at the foreign ministry level, as well as high-level dialogue on national security and the rule of law.

Relations between Beijing and Ottawa have shown signs of improvement in recent months, particularly after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney met Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing earlier this year.

Trade ties have also strengthened. China reduced some tariffs on Canadian goods, while Canada agreed to import thousands of Chinese electric vehicles under preferential tariff arrangements.

According to China’s foreign ministry, Anand expressed Canada’s desire to increase exports to China by 50 percent before 2030. Bilateral trade between the two countries reached nearly $90 billion in 2025, reflecting continued growth in economic cooperation.

Relations between the two nations had deteriorated sharply after Canada’s arrest of a Huawei executive in 2018, followed by allegations of Chinese interference in Canadian elections, which Beijing has consistently denied. However, recent diplomatic engagement suggests both sides are seeking a more stable and constructive relationship.
