Tahir Zaman, one of Pakistan’s most celebrated field hockey figures and a former captain, has been appointed head coach of the national men’s hockey team by the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF). The decision, made ahead of the Asian Champions Trophy 2024, aims to leverage Zaman’s deep experience to boost Pakistan’s international performance.
Born on March 6, 1969, in Gojra, Punjab, Zaman captained Pakistan to a bronze medal at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics and played a crucial role in winning the 1994 FIH Hockey World Cup in Sydney. During his playing career, he earned 252 international caps and scored 134 goals.
He also received the Pride of Performance Award from the Government of Pakistan in 1994 for his outstanding contributions to the sport.
After retiring, Zaman transitioned into coaching and development, including roles with Pakistan’s coaching staff at the 2002 Commonwealth Games. His return as head coach reflects the PHF’s confidence in his leadership and vision to help restore Pakistan hockey’s competitive edge.
