Aston Villa ended a 30-year wait for silverware with a commanding 3-0 win against Freiburg in the Europa League final.
Youri Tielemans opened the scoring late in the first half with a thunderous volley, followed moments later by Emiliano Buendia’s sublime curling effort.
Morgan Rogers sealed the victory in the second half, securing Villa’s first major European trophy since their famous 1982 European Cup win over Bayern Munich.
With Peter Withe and Dennis Mortimer watching from the stands, Villa wore white shirts instead of their traditional claret and blue, echoing the kit from their historic triumph.
Manager Unai Emery celebrated his fifth Europa League win, adding to previous victories with Sevilla and Villarreal, while fans, including Prince William and Tom Hanks, joined the celebrations in Istanbul.
Villa’s victory caps a remarkable season, overcoming a poor start of six winless matches to claim 13 wins in 15 Europa League games.
The triumph highlights Villa’s renaissance under Emery, who took charge in October 2022 with the club just above the relegation zone.
Tielemans’ brilliant volley and Buendia’s curling masterpiece stunned Freiburg, and Rogers’ finish ensured the victory was decisive, giving Villa fans an unforgettable night on the Bosphorus.
