The controversy emerged after a Norwegian journalist called out to Modi as he left the venue without engaging with reporters, asking why he would not take questions from what she described as “the world’s freest press.”

The incident gained attention after Norwegian commentator Helle Lyng shared a video of the moment on social media, highlighting Norway’s top ranking on the World Press Freedom Index compared with India’s lower position.

Modi is currently visiting Norway as part of a multi-country European tour that has also included stops in the United Arab Emirates, the Netherlands and Sweden.

The issue resurfaced during a later press briefing conducted by Indian officials in Oslo, where a journalist questioned India’s human rights record and asked whether Modi would begin taking “critical questions” from the Indian media.

Responding to the questions, India’s Ministry of External Affairs Secretary (West) Sibi George defended the country’s democratic credentials and described India as a longstanding civilisation with a record of global cooperation.

George cited India’s response during the Covid-19 pandemic as evidence of its international responsibility and repeatedly asked not to be interrupted while addressing the queries.

The briefing became tense as the journalist sought direct answers regarding media access and alleged human rights concerns, while George insisted on responding in his own manner.

When asked why Modi himself had not addressed the press, George said it was his responsibility to handle media interactions during the visit and that he would continue to do so.
