AFP Sport has highlighted five young players who could define the tournament and establish themselves as the next generation of football icons.

Nico Paz (Argentina)

Born in Spain but representing reigning world champions Argentina, Nico Paz has developed rapidly in recent seasons. A product of Real Madrid’s academy, the 21-year-old has impressed during his spell in Italy under Cesc Fabregas at Como, with reports suggesting Madrid may activate a buy-back option.

Known for his technical ability and long-range finishing, Paz is being closely watched as a potential successor in Argentina’s evolving squad, where Lionel Messi is expected to be carefully managed during the title defence.

Desire Doué (France)

The 20-year-old French midfielder has already made a mark at club level, delivering standout performances for Paris Saint-Germain, including a key role in their Champions League success.

Despite fierce competition for places in France’s attack featuring Kylian Mbappé and others, Doué has strengthened his case with recent international goals, reinforcing his reputation as one of Europe’s brightest prospects.

Nico O’Reilly (England)

Manchester City’s Nico O’Reilly has emerged as a versatile option under Pep Guardiola, increasingly trusted in a left-back role despite starting his career in midfield.

His performances in domestic competitions have drawn praise for combining physical presence with attacking threat, potentially addressing England’s long-standing need for depth in that position ahead of major tournaments.

Endrick (Brazil)

Brazilian forward Endrick, signed by Real Madrid as a teenager, has been widely regarded as one of football’s most exciting prospects. After gaining early international attention with a decisive goal against England at Wembley, the 19-year-old has continued to develop during a loan spell in France.

Often compared to Brazilian greats for his style and finishing ability, Endrick is expected to play a key role in Brazil’s attacking plans at the World Cup.

Pedri (Spain)

Spain’s Pedri remains central to the national team’s midfield structure, continuing the tradition of technically gifted playmakers.

After overcoming injury setbacks, the Barcelona midfielder has regained top form under Hansi Flick and played a crucial role in recent domestic successes, reinforcing his status as one of Europe’s most influential young midfielders.
