Karachi enforces lane discipline on Sharea Faisal for bikes, buses, rickshaws

KARACHI: Motorbikes, buses and rickshaws will be required to use designated lanes on Sharea Faisal under a new traffic management plan, with violators facing fines, the Karachi Traffic Police announced.

The initiative, unveiled by DIG Traffic Peer Muhammad Shah, aims to introduce structured lane discipline on one of the city’s busiest roads using the existing surveillance camera network.

Shah said the system will initially be implemented on Sharea Faisal, where enforcement infrastructure is already in place.

A one-month awareness campaign will be launched before strict enforcement begins on June 1, allowing commuters time to adapt to the new rules.

Under the plan, motorbikes, rickshaws, buses and other light transport vehicles, including Mazdas, will be restricted to the two leftmost lanes.

The remaining lanes—ranging from two to three depending on the stretch—will be reserved for faster-moving traffic such as cars and double-cabin vehicles.

Enforcement will be carried out through camera-based monitoring, with e-tickets issued to violators.

Fines have been set at Rs2,500 for motorbikes and rickshaws, and Rs7,500 for buses.

Officials say the move is aimed at improving traffic flow and introducing consistent lane discipline in Karachi.
