ISLAMABAD: Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi held meetings with Pakistan’s civil and military leadership during a brief visit to Islamabad, as efforts continue to sustain dialogue between Tehran and Washington, sources said on Sunday.
During his stopover, Araghchi met Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Asim Munir, along with other senior officials, as Pakistan works to keep the peace process on track despite the cancellation of a planned visit by US envoys.
Sources said the Iranian foreign minister later departed for Moscow after concluding his engagements in Islamabad.
Following his departure, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar announced that traffic restrictions around the Serena Hotel and Islamabad’s Red Zone had been lifted, thanking residents of Islamabad and Rawalpindi for their cooperation.
He said public support helped ensure security arrangements and allowed Pakistan to continue its diplomatic efforts for regional peace.
Araghchi’s visit came after his trip to Oman, where he discussed security in the Strait of Hormuz and broader diplomatic efforts to end the Iran-US conflict with Sultan Haitham bin Tariq.
Earlier, he had also met Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Ishaq Dar, describing his initial visit to Pakistan as “very fruitful,” though he expressed reservations about Washington’s commitment to diplomacy.
The developments follow US President Donald Trump’s decision to cancel a planned visit by his envoys to Islamabad, citing dissatisfaction with Iran’s initial proposal, while indicating that discussions remain ongoing.
