14 Pakistani Runners Showcase Resilience at the 130th Boston Marathon

A group of 14 Pakistani athletes, representing both the home country and the global diaspora, competed this Monday in the historic 130th Boston Marathon. As one of the most elite long-distance races in the world, this year’s event featured remarkable stories of personal triumph and social impact from the Pakistani contingent.

Among the standout participants was Amjad Ali, a police constable from Karachi. Ali, who earned his spot with an impressive 2:40 finish at the Karachi Marathon, has become a symbol of grassroots success. Known as the fastest Pakistani finisher at the 2024 Istanbul Marathon, he prepared for the grueling Boston course by training on the streets of Karachi with the support of his colleagues and local running community.

Joining him was Dr. Jehanzeb Mughal, a Karachi-based maxillofacial surgeon who reached a major milestone by completing his “Six Star” journey. Dr. Mughal’s achievement is particularly significant as he overcame obesity and knee injuries to finish all six World Marathon Majors in just three years. His participation also served a philanthropic purpose, raising awareness for the free Oral Cancer Surgery Unit at PEBS Hospital in Karachi, which has provided over 450 pro bono surgeries since 2023.

The group of 14 showcased high-level expertise, including four Six Star finishers and three Seven Star finishers, along with two female runners. These athletes secured their places through a mix of rigorous qualifying times, charitable initiatives, and tour allocations, highlighting the growing presence of Pakistani runners on the international stage.
