At least 10 people were killed and 13 injured when a passenger van fell into a stormwater drain and caught fire on the Rawalpindi–Murree Expressway near Khajut on Wednesday.

According to Motorway Police, the van was travelling from Multan to Murree when it lost control on a sharp bend, went off the road, and plunged into a drainage channel. The vehicle immediately caught fire, trapping passengers inside.

Officials said the van came to rest on its side, making it difficult for doors to open and delaying rescue efforts.

Emergency teams, including motorway police and local rescue services, rushed to the scene. The injured and deceased were shifted to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in Islamabad.

Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident.

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif expressed deep sorrow over the incident and ordered a detailed inquiry. She directed officials to provide full support to the injured and affected families.
