Iran fought back twice to secure a 2-2 draw with New Zealand in their opening Group G match at the 2026 World Cup in Los Angeles.

Elijah Just scored both goals for New Zealand. Ramin Rezaeian and Mohammad Mohebbi replied for Iran to earn a valuable point.

The match attracted attention after uncertainty over Iran’s participation because of Middle East tensions and visa issues with the United States.

In Group H, Spain were held to a surprising 0-0 draw by World Cup debutants Cape Verde.

Spain dominated possession and created chances but failed to break down Cape Verde’s defence. Goalkeeper Vozinha played a key role in the upset.

Cape Verde celebrated a historic result in their first-ever World Cup appearance, while Spain coach Luis de la Fuente remained confident about his team’s chances.

Elsewhere, Belgium drew 1-1 with Egypt after an own goal helped cancel out Emam Ashour’s opener.

Uruguay also came from behind to draw 1-1 with Saudi Arabia, with Maxi Araujo scoring a late equaliser.
