The FIFA World Cup 2026 officially began on Thursday with a colorful opening ceremony at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. Shakira and Burna Boy entertained thousands of fans with a performance of the tournament’s official song, “Dai Dai.”

The opening match saw co-hosts Mexico face South Africa in front of a packed crowd. The tournament, jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, features 48 teams and will run until the final on July 19.

FIFA has faced criticism over high ticket prices and visa issues affecting some officials and supporters. However, FIFA President Gianni Infantino defended the event’s organization and said efforts were made to ensure broad participation.

Mexico coach Javier Aguirre said his team is eager to make history by winning its first-ever World Cup opening match. South Africa coach Hugo Broos urged his players to stay focused despite the intense home support for Mexico.

Spain, France, and England are among the favourites to win the title. Defending champions Argentina will once again rely on star captain Lionel Messi as they aim to retain the World Cup trophy.
