FIFA has introduced a new rule banning fans from bringing refillable water bottles into World Cup stadiums. The decision comes just weeks before the tournament begins in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Until recently, FIFA’s stadium guidelines allowed spectators to carry empty, transparent reusable bottles with a capacity of up to one litre. However, the organization has now updated its code of conduct and removed that permission.

A FIFA spokesperson said the change was made for safety reasons. According to FIFA, reusable bottles could pose a risk of injury to players, officials, and other spectators. Several World Cup venues already had similar restrictions in place.

To help fans cope with the heat, FIFA said stadiums will provide hydration stations, misting areas, cooling tents, and fans throughout venue grounds. Bottled water will also be available for purchase inside stadiums at prices comparable to other events.

The decision has drawn attention because of concerns about extreme temperatures during the tournament. Climate experts have warned that many matches could be played in potentially dangerous heat conditions.

A recent study by the World Weather Attribution group estimated that 26 of the tournament’s 104 matches may take place when heat stress levels exceed recommended thresholds. The assessment used the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT), which measures heat stress by combining temperature, humidity, wind, and sunlight.

Similar restrictions were enforced during last year’s FIFA Club World Cup in the United States, where many fans reported experiencing intense heat during matches.
