Australian activists detained during a Gaza aid flotilla mission have returned home, alleging abuse and mistreatment by Israeli forces during their detention.

The group was part of an international flotilla carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza when Israeli forces intercepted the boats in international waters last week.

According to organisers, more than 400 volunteers from around 40 countries were involved in the mission.

Australian activist and filmmaker Juliet Lamont claimed she was dragged, beaten, and sexually assaulted after being detained.

Another activist, Sam Woripa Watson, said he suffered a fractured rib along with bruises and cuts. He also alleged that some activists were tasered and hit with rubber bullets.

Organisers of the flotilla said they documented several cases of alleged abuse, including claims of sexual assault inside detention areas.

However, Israel’s prison service has denied all accusations of mistreatment. Reuters reported that the allegations could not be independently verified.

The incident has increased international criticism of Israel, especially after a video circulated online showing Israeli officials mocking detained activists.

Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong described the footage as “shocking and unacceptable.”

The flotilla mission was organised to deliver aid to Gaza amid continuing humanitarian concerns in the region.
